Founded in 1630, Boston is the oldest and largest major city in New England. It is the capital of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and is the 24th largest city in the United States. Boston is part of the 8th largest metropolitan area that also includes Worcester and Manchester (NH).

Boston is located at the mouth of the Charles River on Boston Harbor at the eastern edge of Massachusetts. The heart of Boston serves as the city's commercial and financial district. The compact, walkable city contains many historical landmarks and monuments, including the Old State House, the Granary Burial Ground, and the Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

Boston is a city of firsts. The first public library, the first public school (Boston Latin), the first US college (Harvard University), the first savings bank (Provident Institute for Savings), the first vaudeville theater, and the first subway system.

Boston has humid summers and moderately cold winters, and is subject to periodic nor'easters (storms with winds that come from the northeast) that can leave inches of rain or several feet of snow in the region.

The city's unique cultural and historic heritage make it a center of tourism. Banking, financial services, insurance, and real estate drive its economy. Other businesses include high technology, biotechnology, software, and electronics. Major sports teams include the Boston Red Sox (baseball), Boston Celtics (basketball), Boston Bruins (hockey), and the New England Patriots (football).
